What Is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are small screw-shaped rods of titanium. They are designed to be placed into your jaw bone, and function as artificial tooth roots. Titanium has the unique ability to permanently bond with bone tissue. Once in place, your implant will permanently be attached to your jaw bone.

Then, it can be restored. The most common type of implant restoration is a dental crown. This crown is permanently attached to the implant, and functions as a false tooth. It’s also possible to attach dental bridges or even a full set of dentures to a set of multiple dental implants.

The Unique Benefits of Dental Implants

WHY CHOOSE IMPLANTS?

First, dental implants last 30+ years with proper care. That’s far longer than bridges or dentures. They also require minimal care. You can treat them just like real teeth. Brush twice a day, floss once a day, and see us for six-month checkups. That’s it!

Dental implants also never shift or move, unlike dentures. They look, feel, and function just like real teeth. In addition to all these benefits, they help protect your oral health. Dental implants stimulate your jawbone when you chew. This keeps the bone strong, and prevents jaw bone loss, which is a common problem after losing one or more teeth.

UNDERSTANDING THE DENTAL IMPLANT PROCESS

Implant Placement
To begin the process, Dr. Park will clean the treatment area and numb your mouth. Then, he will open up the gum tissue and jaw bone. He will place a small titanium implant into the jaw bone, then suture the area shut. This process will be repeated if you’re getting multiple implants.
Healing & Osseointegration
You’ll be sent home with a set of instructions to follow as you heal. The initial healing process takes 1-2 weeks. However, it will take between 3-6 months for your implant to fully bond with your jaw bone. You will come into Camellia Dentistry for multiple follow-ups during this time.
Final Implant Restoration
During your follow-ups, Dr. Park will take measurements of your mouth and implant, and use these to create an implant restoration, such as a dental crown. Our partner dental lab will build this restoration and send it to Camellia Dentistry. Once your implant has healed completely, you’ll come into our office for your final appointment. Dr. Park will attach your implant restoration, and you’ll be sent home to enjoy your brand new smile.

Am I a Good Candidate?

QUALIFYING FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS

To get dental implants, your mouth must be free of other major oral health problems. Things like gum disease and infected teeth must be treated before you can get implant surgery. You also must have a jaw bone that’s strong enough to accommodate an implant.

Bone grafts can be used to restore your jaw, but this will add more time and expense to your treatment. Non-smokers are also preferred, since smoking and tobacco use leads to a dramatically higher risk of dental implant complications.
