What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a procedure that’s used to treat infected teeth. A tooth becomes infected when the durable outer layers of the tooth are destroyed, exposing the vulnerable “pulp” inside the tooth. Dental trauma and tooth decay are the most common causes of infected teeth.
In a root canal, Dr. Park opens up the tooth, cleans it out, then fills it up and restores it with a dental crown. This eliminates the infection and preserves your tooth. Without a root canal to treat a tooth infection, your condition will only get worse. You could experience a lot of pain, and your tooth may even die and fall out.
The Benefits of Root Canals
WHY IS TREATING INFECTED TEETH IMPORTANT?
First, treating an infected tooth with a root canal eliminates the source of the infection. In turn, this prevents further complications and also gets you out of pain. Toothaches can be debilitating, and prevent you from living your normal day-to-day life.
This also saves you time and money. A root canal can save your tooth, which means you won’t need a tooth extraction and a tooth replacement, such as a dental implant. These procedures are much more invasive, costly, and time-consuming.
THE ROOT CANAL TREATMENT PROCESS
Eliminating The Infection
Dr. Park will clean and numb your tooth. Then, he will open it up with a dental drill, and remove all of the decayed and infected pulp from inside your tooth. Then, he will flush it and sanitize the inside of the tooth to completely eliminate the infection.
Filling The Tooth
Next, Dr. Park will use a rubber-like material to fill the inside of your tooth. This replaces the extracted pulp and keeps your tooth strong. After that, he will place a temporary crown or filling. This will protect your tooth until your permanent crown can be placed.
Placing A Crown
After you’re done with your root canal, you’ll need to come back for a few follow-ups to get a permanent dental crown. At Camellia Dentistry, we use porcelain, lab-made crowns that look and feel just like natural teeth.
